NCAA Game Summary - Nevada at San Diego State
(Friday, October 4th)
Final Score: San Diego State 51, Nevada 44 (OT)
San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - San Diego State gave away a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter Friday night but beat Nevada 51-44 in overtime on Eric Judge's second touchdown catch of the game.
It was the second year in a row the Mountain West Conference rivals went to overtime.
San Diego State also pulled out the win last season, but nearly gave this one away after building a 44-23 lead through three quarters. Nevada came all the way back to tie it on Richy Turner's 5-yard touchdown catch with 98 seconds left in regulation.
But Judge leapt to catch Quinn Kaehler's 13-yard pass in overtime and the Aztecs (2-3, 1-0 MWC) stopped Cody Fajardo and the Wolf Pack (3-3, 2-1) for their eighth straight conference win.
Kaehler threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns, also hooking up with Dylan Denso for a score. Adam Muema rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns and Donnel Pumphrey had a 72-yard touchdown run among his 112 yards on the ground.
Fajardo passed for 387 yards and two touchdowns but also fumbled twice for the Wolf Pack, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Kendall Brock had three short touchdown runs and rushed for 107 yards
Brock's third touchdown, a 3-yard run, and Don Jackson's 1-yard score cut it to 44-37 for Nevada with 6:26 remaining in regulation.
San Diego State chose to go for it on fourth down on the ensuing possession, but Kaehler's pass was incomplete, giving the Wolf Pack the ball at their own 40.
The big play on Nevada's game-tying drive was Turner's 30-yard catch down the right sideline. The play was reviewed -- Turner came down with it in a tough battle with corner Damontae Kazee -- and upheld, leading to Turner's 5-yard touchdown catch in the back of the end zone to tie the game.
Earlier, Pumphrey's 72-yard touchdown gave the Aztecs a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter and Nevada came right back to score on Brock's 1-yard run to cap a 13-play, 75-yard drive.
The Wolf Pack took a 10-7 lead on Brent Zuzo's 44-yard field goal early in the second quarter after a San Diego State fumble. But they turned the ball over on downs later and Muema's 7-yard touchdown run put the Aztecs on top 14-10.
Nevada moved back ahead on Fajardo's 10-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Wimberly, but a high snap on a punt led to a safety and San Diego State took a 23-17 lead into halftime after Kaehler's 25-yard touchdown pass to Denso just inside the goal line with nine seconds left.
In the third quarter, Muema's 9-yard touchdown run and Tim Vizzi's 5-yarder both came after Fajardo fumbles, giving the Aztecs a 36-17 lead -- the PAT after Muema's touchdown was blocked.
Brock's second touchdown run, a 4-yarder, got Nevada within 36-23 after the PAT failed, but the Aztecs came right back with a score, Kaehler's 5-yard pass to Judge, and went up 44-23 on the two-point conversion.
