Springfield, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Armand tallied 21 points and five assists, as the Iona Gaels held off the Canisius Golden Griffins, 75-72, in the semifinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at the MassMutual Center.
Armand shot 8-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range for top-seeded Iona (22-9), which will play Manhattan in Monday night's championship game. Isaiah Williams and Tre Bowman poured in 16 points apiece, while A.J. English added 12 points.
For fourth-seeded Canisius (21-12), Billy Baron led all scorers with 23 points, Chris Manhertz logged 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Zach Lewis and Chris Perez poured in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Iona held a 48-41 lead heading into the halftime locker room after shooting a lofty 61.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 8-of-17 from beyond the arc. Canisius couldn't keep pace at 48.4 percent.
The Gaels held a 10-point lead with just over four minutes to play before the Griffs used a 10-0 run to tie the game at 70 with 1:28 left on a pair of Baron free throws. Iona responded on its next possession when David Laury grabbed an offensive rebounds and put back the layup to give the Gaels the lead for good.
Iona outscored Canisius from 3-point range, 30-21.
