Missoula, MT (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaseem Dixon finished with 23 points and four assists as the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks downed the Montana Grizzlies, 73-65, in the Big Sky Conference opener for both sides at Dahlberg Arena.
Dixon made all but one of his nine field goal attempts and hit on all three of his tries from beyond the arc for NAU (4-8, 1-0 Big Sky) in the contest. Max Jacobsen provided 21 points while Quinton Upshur tallied 18 points and three blocked shots. Gaellan Bewernick and Len Springs grabbed eight boards each.
Montana (5-5, 0-1) was paced by Kareem Jamar, who contributed 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Jordan Gregory added 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field.
The Grizzlies took control in the early stages of the matchup and held a 37-29 lead at the intermission. Montana sank 7-of-16 shots from behind the 3-point line in the first half while the Lumberjacks went 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
NAU was unstoppable on the offensive end after the break, converting 77.3 percent of its field goal tries including 4-of-4 from 3-point range. The Lumberjacks also held Montana to just 35.7 percent efficiency from the floor over the final 20 minutes to complete the rally.
The Lumberjacks used a 33-24 edge in the rebounding battle and a 7-of-11 clip from beyond the arc to pull off the upset in their conference opener. Montana fell despite making 11-of-14 shots at the charity stripe.
