Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Maurice Barrow netted a career-high 21 points, leading Fairfield to its sixth straight victory, a 66-45 decision on the road against the Canisius Golden Griffins in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Barrow knocked down 9-of-13 shots from the floor and led all scorers in the victory for the Stags (10-5, 2-1 MAAC), who haven't lost since a 67-55 setback to this same Canisius squad back on Dec. 7 in the conference opener for both teams. Derek Needham joined Barrow in double figures with 10 points, while Keith Matthews was just under that mark with nine points.
Canisius (9-5, 2-1 MAAC) lost its first home game of the season, as well as suffering its first conference loss. Billy Baron led the Golden Griffins in defeat with 14 points. Chris Manhertz recorded a double-double in the loss with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
The Stags scored the first 11 points of the game and held Canisius scoreless for the first five minutes. Fairfield's lead swelled to as many as 18 points in the first half, before the Stags settled in with a 34-17 advantage at the break. Barrow was responsible for half of the team's 14 field goals over the first 20 minutes, heading into intermission with 14 points. Canisius was a meager 5-of-22 from the floor in the first half.
Canisius never got closer than 17 points in the second half and trailed by more than 20 for much of the final 20 minutes. Neither team shot the ball particularly well in the second half, with both knocking down nine field goals in the frame.
Fairfield and Canisius both amassed 34 rebounds in the game, but the Golden Griffins were guilty of 21 turnovers, resulting in 24 points for the Stags.
