GAME NOTES: The Lamar Cardinals travel to Fairfax, Virginia for a BracketBuster encounter with the George Mason Patriots this afternoon.
The Cardinals were 70-54 winners over Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday night in a Southland Conference game that assured Lamar of a slot in the conference tournament. It was the Cardinals' fifth victory in their last six games. Lamar comes into his game with a 6-8 road record.
George Mason, which is tied for the lead in the Colonial Athletic Association with Drexel heading into the weekend, comes into this BracketBuster game off a 62-61 win over VCU on Tuesday. Sherrod Wright hit a three-pointer with one second left in regulation to give the Patriots their fourth straight win and their 10th in their last 11 outings. The Patriots are 14-1 on their home court this season.
This is just the second meting between the two teams. George Mason won the first encounter.
Anthony Miles had a big night for the Cardinals on Wednesday, scoring 18 points. Mike James added 17 points and Devon Lamb 11. Lamb also pulled down 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Lamar led by as many as 21 points in the second half. James is the leading scorer on the ballclub at 16.4 ppg. He's shooting 45.2 percent from the floor, although just 30.1 percent from long range. He's also hitting 81.8 percent from the foul line. Miles is next at 14.6 points per contest, sixth best in the conference. He's hitting 45.7 percent from the floor, an even 39 percent from long range, and 79.8 percent from the line. He's also averaging a team-best 3.8 assists per game. Lamb is also averaging in double figures at 11.6 ppg. and is also the team's leading rebounder at 8.3 boards per contest. As a team, the Cardinals are shooting 43.5 percent from the floor but just 34.3 percent from long range. Lamar is scoring 75.3 points per game while allowing 67.1 points per contest.
Ryan Pearson led the way for the Patriots on Tuesday with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Vertrail Vaughns added 14 points, while Wright finished with 11. Pearson leads the team in scoring at 17.9 ppg., which is third best in the CAA. He's shooting 51.1 percent from the floor, 36.2 percent from long range, and 70.6 percent from the line. Pearson also leads the team in rebounding at 8.6 boards per game. He's the only George Mason player scoring in double figures. Wright is next at 9.4 ppg. It's been a matter of dividing the load for the Patriots this season. Four players have started every game but nine players are averaging 21 minutes a game or more. George Mason is shooting 45.7 percent from the floor and 39.3 percent from long range. The Patriots are playing good defense, allowing just 63 points per game, while scoring 70.1
This is one of better BracketBuster games on the card. Both teams have legitimate hopes of an NCAA at-large bid if they don't win their respective conference tournaments.
